Notes & Reviews:

The young Offenbach had been thrilled by the first performance of this fantastic play by Barbier and Carre in 1851, and would eventually produce the operatic masterpiece that would be unfinished at his death. Though completed by others, this work won the praise of Rossini, who called Offenbach "The Mozart of the Champ-Elysees." These excerpts feature some of the greatest German singers of an earlier generation.
