Notes & Reviews:

Gramophone Magazine
What he [Bach] might have written if he had understood the Baroque lute as well as North does. These are performances that combine good style and intelligence with heart and sensibility, and in which phrases are naturally breathed through articulation and dynamics.

The benchmark against which other Baroque lute recordings are measured, this title remains popular. Having sold out of the original boxed set, Linn is pleased to re-issue 'Bach on the Lute' in a new-look collection. North applies his encyclopedic knowledge and instinctive flair for the lute, to the transcriptions and arrangements of works for violin and cello by J.S. Bach, a practice started by the composer himself who frequently re-scored existing pieces if a work for lute was required. The ever-popular Cello Suites are transformed when played on lute. The instrument allows North to sustain and clarify the counterpoint, harmony and bass line which is sketched in the original, creating an authentic, yet quite unique interpretation. The Violin Sonatas and Partitas, renowned for their technical difficulties and requirement for depth of musical expression, are beautifully rediscovered. North sensitively presents a distinctive orchestration of these pieces which intriguingly emphasizes the subtle Italian influence of these works. North's most recent solo album on Linn 'Go From My Window' was awarded 'Editor's Choice' from Gramophone and cemented his reputation as one of the world's greatest lutenists. North's series of recordings on Linn have been critically acclaimed. Named an 'éminence grise of the lute' by BBC Music Magazine, one of the 'finest living lutenists' by Gramophone and 'enterprising, compelling and eloquent' by Classical Guitar Magazine. 'Bach on the Lute' displays the character and tone of the lute at its best, beautifully served by these creative transcriptions and North's outstanding technical and interpretive ability.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
North follows Bach's model, and his transcriptions are completely convincing. And they really become lute works very different from the originals - and very different from guitar transcriptions. Tempos are moderate, though North plays with plenty of energy. He uses the lower range of his Baroque lute to good effect. North will change your mind. Ornamentation is frequent and usually subtle. Remarkable performances of works of genius - this is a real treasure.
