Notes & Reviews:
Catalani's opera was a success at La Scala when first given there in 1892 but it remains something of a rarity in the theatre today and there have been very few recordings. The great Arturo Toscanini thought so much of the piece that he even named his children after characters in it!
The Penguin Guide
his 1968 complete recording of the opera stars Renata Tebaldi in the title role who "... gives one of her most tenederly affecting performances on record, a glorious example of her singing late in her career ... her poise and control of line ... provide a model for any generation ... the recording ... is superbly focused and vividly real. a fine example of Decca recording at a vintage period.
BBC Music Magazine
This sprawling epic has a very fine cast, with Renata Tebaldi as an almost ideal Leonora, and the loud impressive del Monaco as the hero. The early stereo sound is good, but the conducting is listless; the work drags, as it need not.
the recording is outstanding for its time. Tebaldi, as always, makes some lovely sounds and the mezza voce in the soaring theme (first heard in the overture) in Madre madre pietosa Vergine is exquisite
