Notes & Reviews:

"This is hearty and robust music-making, the central fugato [of the final movement of the Third Symphony] joyfully resounding from every corner of the roomAfter the euphoria [of the Third], I feared [Abbado's] Italian would come as a considerable letdown. Not a bit of itAt 2:51 [in the finale] you can practically hear the cellos cry out "Faster, faster!", urging on the others as if possessed - yet all is wonderfully crisp and clear, heightening excitement by gradually increasing tension rather than spiraling out of control. And honors must surely extend to the engineers, who have captured the bloom and warmth of London's Kingsway Hall." - American Record Guide

Penguin Guide
Abbado's outstanding Decca Scottish Symphony is beautifully played and the LSO responds to his direction with the greatest delicacy of feeling, while the Italian Symphony has a comparable lightness of touch, matched with lyrical warmth. The vintage 1968 Kingsway Hall recording is freshly detailed yet full, with glowing wind colour.
