Notes & Reviews:

After his studies at the Prague Conservatory and career as a solo clarinetist, Johann Sobeck was the principal clarinetist at the Hanover Royal Opera from 1851 to 1901. He was regarded as a genial virtuoso on his instrument, and so his compositional oeuvre consists mostly of chamber works for the clarinet. The three Quintets for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon recorded here are brimming with harmonic richness, vibrant melodies, and captivating rhythms, and all the instruments have the chance to shine in the virtuoso spotlight. A spirited interpretation by the Albert Schweitzer Quintet!
