Notes & Reviews:

In 'Le Devin du Village,' The shepherd Colin, who has taken to courting a noble lady, grows weary of a life of luxury and returns to his simple country life with the shepherdess Colette. Rousseau could not have come up with a better plot for the impressive and urgent proclamation of the motto that turned the eighteenth century around and upside down: Back to Nature! Tragic subjects from antiquity would no longer monopolize the dramatic realm; the plain, simple, and everyday would finally find a welcome place on the stage. Rousseau’s little opera is endowed with charming, deliberately simple music more than meriting a new recording with historical instruments.

There is much beauty and charm in Rousseau's music
