Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

FOR ONCE, the works here presented by Timpani are not recording premieres, even though the Second Cello Concerto has not been recorded very often. Small wonder considering the nightmarish difficulty of the soloist part, which the composer has often written out on two staves instead of the customary single line. And curiously, for all its difficulty this masterpiece seems less flashy though musically much more interesting than the First Concerto. This challenge has been taken up by star French cellist Jerôme Pernoo, whose Offenbach recording with Minkowsky has placed among the stars. Let us also present a young conductor, Nicolas Chalvin, who worked as solo oboist at the Luxemburg orchestra before becoming the late Amin Jordan's last assistant, and whose career has already begun to extend to Genève, Lausanne and most recently Rennes, Nancy and Caen. With this recording Timpani reaffirms its privileged link with the Orchestre de Bretagne, with which it has recorded music by Le Flem and Ropartz among others. In next September, the very young conductor Lionel Bringuier -Salonen's assistant in Los Angeles- will record with it the manuscript score of the "Italian" Symphony (No. 1) by D'Indy.
