Notes & Reviews:

We should point out that the semi-serious genre in Rossini, apart from being somewhat limited in quantity, is also the least studied by critics and the most difficult to define: and perhaps for this reason it has always been the least popular with the public. Audiences may find a "crescendo", that is a neutral form of "accumulation of energy" reinforcing a tragic moment when, by conditioned reflex, they are used to associating this technique with a comic situation. Much of the "adventurous" action in Torvaldo, in fact, finds extraordinary happenings animated by "crescendo": striking examples are the taut, overwhelming, wonderful Finale I, especially in the stretta in Allegro moderato "Su, Dorliska, fate core", the frenetic Trio with chorus "Si cercherà, si troverà" or Dorliska's bravura cabaletta "Ah! Morir pel caro sposo". Torvaldo is therefore a rare opera, today as yesterday, both in the theatre and in recordings. (2 CDs)
