Notes & Reviews:
Joseph Haydn's 'The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross" is one of the most emblematic musical creations of the Age of Enlightenment. More than 200 years later, its spiritual message and expressive power are as vibrant as ever. This richly varied sequence of eight slow movements maintains a powerful mood of stirring intensity and fervor. For this, their second traversal of the work on CD, Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations traveled to the little-known site of its first performance (1786) - the Santa Cueva Church in the Spanish city of Cadiz. The result is a spacious and moving recording, which intersperses the spoken biblical quotations in Latin between the musical movements.
