Notes & Reviews:
Fascinated by the broad range of timbral possibilities, Renaissance musicians developed a wide variety of instrumental colors, ranging from the 'vocal imitation' of the bowed strings to the bird-like piping of the high winds, the twang of the wire-strung cittern and the buzz of the crumhorns. In true English 'broken consort' style, the Baltimore Consort, one of America's most popular early-music ensembles, mixes instruments from different families and exploits the diverse sound colors offered by gut-strung and wire-strung string instruments, transverse and end-blown recorders, flutes and capped reeds and percussion.
