Notes & Reviews:

Gounod's Romeo et Juliette had its premiere in Paris, at the Theatre-Lyrique, on April 27, 1867. It was successful, and was given in both London and New York before the year was out. This live performance, from the Nice Opera in 1976, was originally issued on LP but has long been unavailable, despite winning warm praise from critics around the world. Conductor Antonio de Almeida (1928–1997), a student of Hindemith at Yale, was one of the world’s authorities on French Romantic music. His efforts on behalf of French music won him the French Legion of Honor.
