Notes & Reviews:

The Grimma school was founded a few years after the Reformation and functioned as an academy preparing its pupils for studies at the two universities in Leipzig and Wittenberg. Since it did not have a music director of its own, the necessary music was obtained through extensive copying and then carefully stored away! Many of the best compositions between Schütz and Bach are known exclusively from the Grimma manuscripts. The Saechsisches Vocalensemble under Manfred Jung has recorded a selection of splendid Christmas cantatas for us!
