Notes & Reviews:

The Legend of St. Elizabeth, begun in Weimar in 1857, completed in Rome in 1862, and premiered in Budapest in 1865, is certainly one of his key works, given the fact that he identified with St. Elizabeth in a special way: like her, he was from Hungary; both had dedicated themselves to a mission (he, to pure art; she, to pure love); and like her, he felt torn inwardly between the standards he had set for himself and the high ideals and darker side of the real world. The form of the oratorio is based on Moritz von Schwind’s fresco cycle depicting the central moments of the saint’s life. It can be viewed on the Wartburg, where she, like Liszt himself, once lived and worked.
