Shostakovich, Dmitri : Symphony no 5 in D minor, Op. 47
Rachmaninov, Sergei : Isle of the Dead, Op. 29Notes & Reviews:
Starting in 1965 Svetlanov was principal conductor of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra which he built into one of the greatest Russian orchestras. In 1979 he was appointed principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. Svetlanov was particularly noted for his interpretations of Russian works - he covered the whole range of Russian music, from Glinka to the present day. This new release of Shostakovich's Symphony No.5 follows the BBC Legends live Shostakovich Symphony No.8 with Svetlanov and the LSO from the Royal Festival Hall in 1979, the year he was appointed principal guest conductor.
