Notes & Reviews:

The latter half of the seventeenth century saw a great flowering of the short and succinct "air serieux" - the most common sub-category of the French "air de cour," or courtly song. The poetry which became the basis for the "air serieux" bore the general name of "galanterie" and was prized for being "delicate," "cheerful," "sweet" and "light-footed." The "esprit galant" ruled in the literary salons of Paris. Setting the tone in music were such masters of the genre as Antoine Boesset, Michel Lambert, Sebastien le Camus and Marc-Antoine Charpentier. Described as a "perfect partnership" by International Record Review, the dynamic duo of soprano Johannette Zomer and theorbo player Fred Jacobs presents a stylish program of these miniature jewels.

BBC Music Magazine
Fred Jacobs is both expert as accompanist and as soloist in his various solos, notably a fine chaconne by Robert de Visée. Johannette Zomer is adept in dealing with the vocal ornament needed to leaven repetition and, in this sympathetic recorded ambience, often charms.
