Notes & Reviews:

On this recording, two early Quartets by Dmitri Shostakovich receive an orchestral treatment without losing their chamber-music intimacy. For each transcription, double-bassist and arranger Marijn van Prooij has added an arresting bass part. The genius of Shostakovich has been a longtime source of inspiration for the Amsterdam Sinfonietta - an ensemble which occupies a unique position as one of the very few large-scale string formations on the international scene. What sets the Amsterdam Sinfonietta apart is its commitment to a "chamber-music mentality," which yields performances of rare dynamism and intensity that involve the listener in a vibrant live-concert experience.

Gramophone Magazine
Curious that the Second is among the last of the quartets to be given orchestral treatment, as its symphonic weight and expressive range make it the most suitable in any case. The Amsterdam group respond with playing of tremendous dynamism.
