Notes & Reviews:
In 1921 Swiss playwright Rene Morax asked Honegger to composer music for a play based on the heroic figure of King David. The original version - a spectacle lasting more than four hours - was eventually supplanted by the version performed here, a "Symphonic Psalm" with the spoken parts reduced to one narrator. King David consists of three large sections that follow the major events in the Biblical story of David, and Honnegger successfully wedded a number of different stylistic influences to create the work's powerful musical impact.
