Bizet: Carmen / Fricsay, Berlin RIAS Chamber Chorus, et al

Album Summary

>Bizet, Georges : Carmen, opera
Performers Conductor Ensembles Composer

Notes & Reviews:

One may not automatically associate the great Hungarian conductor Ferenc Fricsay (1914-1963) with this kind of repertoire, but Carmen was not a new work to him when these excerpts were recorded. In fact, following this radio production, he would eventually record a similar selection, with a completely different cast for Deutsche Grammophon. His first performances of the work five years prior in Vienna helped catapult him to fame. Not yet 35, Fricsay had been appointed Principal Conductor of the R.I.A.S (Radio in the American Sector) Symphony Orchestra in 1949. The performance captured on this disc is now over 50 years old. Just the same it seems surprisingly fresh, particularly so in the instrumental sections.
