Notes & Reviews:

Johann Ludwig Bach - one of the most accomplished of J.S. Bach's cousins - was appointed in 1699 as a musician at the Court of Meiningen, first as a member of the choir then in 1703 as Court Choirmaster, responsible for the church music. Finally in 1711 he became Court Music Director, and he remained in that position for 20 years, until his death. The four works on this release are a prime example of his style and attitudes towards sacred music. Of great significance is that J.S. Bach had personal copies made so he cold conduct them at services in Leipzig beginning in the year 1726.
