Notes & Reviews:
For those who know and love the extensive orchestral works of Shostakovich, the material on this disc is quite unusual. Surprisingly, considering his large output, there is not a generous amount of solo piano music, and only one "official" two-piano piece, the present Concertino which was first performed in 1954 by Anna Maloletkova and the composer's young son Maxim. Written between July and August 1971, the Symphony No. 15 would be the composer's last. Controversial from the start for its mixture of the profound and the jocose, the work is now considered one of his major statements.
