Notes & Reviews:
When on his grand tour of Europe, Leopold Mozart visited the electoral residence with his children and had the opportunity to experience the Mannheim Hofkapelle. Shortly thereafter, Leopold related his impressions to his friend Lorenz Hagenauer in Salzburg. This expert on the European music scene, who was anything but lavish with his praise, wrote, "This orchestra is beyond dispute the best in Germany." Director of this first-class ensemble was the 31 year-old Christian Cannabich. No one else's biography is bound as closely with the history of the Mannheim School as his.
