Album Notes

After Innova Records began the ENCLOSURE series of archival CDs gathering rare and previously unknown audio works by the reclusive and experimental California composer Harry Partch, a DVD like ENCLOSURE 8 was an obvious second step. This DVD release includes four exceedingly rare films featuring Partch and his unique microtonal music. The films include "Music Studio," an 18-minute 1958 interview with Partch that includes a tour of his studio and scenes of Partch playing his self-made instruments. This is a companion piece to "Windsong," another 1958 film that restages the legend of Daphne and Apollo. "U.S. Highball" is a 25-minute dramatic musical reading of Partch's Great Depression hobo diaries, while "Rotate the Body In All Its Planes" is a 1961 ballet piece performed by gymnasts. This DVD also adds three never-before-seen pieces: a half-hour television documentary from 1968, a 1952 performance of Partch's Castor and Pollux, and a posthumous 1981 performance by the Barstow and San Diego Partch Ensemble.
