Notes & Reviews:

Vol. 2 of CPO's quartet edition with the Schuppanzigh Quartet features selected works by Ferdinand Ries underscoring the great significance of this composer. Ries once again proves to be a master and, as we today now see, a trailblazing composer very much worth rediscovering. Throughout his life the Beethoven pupil Ries occupied himself with the composition of string quartets, but it was not until 1816 that he presented three quartets to the public in his op. 70.

Sunday Times
The Second Quartet, Op 70, No 2, first performed in 1816, still inhabits the classical world of Haydn, although there's a certain Beethoven-like solidness about it, too. The searching Quartet in F minor, WoO 48, composed in 1833-35, reflects the spirit of middle-period rather than late-period Beethoven. Excellent performances by the Schuppanzigh-Quartett, though the liner notes are turgidly analytical.
