Notes & Reviews:

"I had never believed that a woman could write something such. She knows all the clever tricks of the composer’s trade." According to tradition, the famous Camille Saint-Saens is supposed to have said these words to the composer Jean Gounod, the son of Charles Gounod, immediately after a concert attended by the two at the home of the composer Mel Bonis. His words offer a revealing glimpse at the situation in which women composers then lived and worked; they were hardly encouraged, not to mention recognized. Although the French composer Mel Bonis received great praise from her famous male colleagues, she very soon was forgotten.

Gramophone Magazine
No.1 also dates from the 1900s and is the work that so deeply impressed Saint-Sadns at its premiere (which featured Pierre-Monteux, no less on viola). Cast in the traditional four movements, it is sunny and relaxed with a classical balance evident from the opening barà..The Mozart Piano Quartet provide these works with enthusiastic advocacy and MDG's sound is a model of clarity and natural balance - just like Bonis's music
