Norwegian avant-garde vocalist Maja Ratkje may draw comparisons to Bjork, Meredith Monk, and the Dada sound poets, but in truth her music exists beyond comparison. A one-woman sampler, Ratkje squeaks, wails, and snorts, alternating with sudden flights into lyrical melody that hint at a postmodern sensibility drawing from electronica's cut-and-paste aesthetic. RIVER MOUTH ECHOES, released on John Zorn's Tzadik label, showcases Ratkje's startling talents amid a seething web of symphonic strings, and provides notice to Americans that a new sonic visionary has arrived.
