Notes & Reviews:

The organological subgroup of the chordophones to which the harp belongs also includes two other basic types of instrument: the lute and the zither. The harp is distinguished by its vertical strings. Evidence of the first harps dates back about 6000 years in Egypt. The harp originally established itself as an accompanying instrument to both sacred and secular songs. The modern double-action harp emerged in the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the invention of the practicable pedal mechanism and other improvements which simplified the execution of unusual chords. Its solo repertoire is modest, however, there are many works composed by harp virtuosos and various arrangements of suitable piano works.
