Notes & Reviews:

Here is a new series from Berlin Classics featuring portraits of the most important instruments from a selection of solo, chamber and orchestral works. The oboe, the flute, the clarinet and the bassoon are the four most important woodwinds in the symphony orchestra. The oboe, a double reed instrument, has the richest tradition. The earliest findings of reed instruments are from Mesopotamia and are about 4800 years old. In ancient Greece the instrument was known as the aulos and in Roman times as the tibia, while various other forms are also found in non-European cultures. In the orchestra of the 18th century, only the oboe was able to establish itself as a partner with the violin. The oboe concerto repertoire is not very large, but this marvelous two CD set provides an excellent introduction.
