Notes & Reviews:

Following its most successful recording, The Art of Fugue, the Emerson String Quartet again dedicates its mastery to the music of J.S. Bach. The quartet, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007, presents the world-premiere recording of the four-part fugues from the famous Well-Tempered Clavier as arranged for string quartet. The Emerson Quartet's 2003 release of The Art of Fugue was a critical and commercial success selling 50,000 units worldwide. Repertoire from this world-premiere recording will be included in the Emerson Quartet's touring program. Emerson String Quartets members are Eugene Drucker, 1st violin/2nd violin/2nd viola (5-voice fugues), Philip Setzer, 2nd violin/1st violin, Lawrence Dutton, viola/1st viola (5-voice fugues) and David Finckel, cello. 21 tracks.

"An inspired follow-up to their recording of Bach's Die Kunst der Fuge, the Emerson Quartet's disc of fugues for four and five voices from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier is simply superb. These twenty-one arrangements (all by either Emanuel Aloys Forster or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), present Bach's music with a surprising ease and naturalness. Bach's highly contrapuntal music sounds very appropriate played on melodic instruments, and taking the fugues out of their original contexts makes them sound sounds new and fresh." -All Music Guide

Gramophone Magazine
Perfect playing, superb sound - but Bach shouldn't be this well tempered... Sonically speaking, the Emersons have never sounded better on disc, yet there's more to this music than their beautiful, world-class playing lets on.

New York Sun
In the Art of Fugue, the Emerson String Quartet left an overall impression of intelligence and beauty. It is hard to go higher.

The Times
On the one hand, sharing out Bach's keyboard fugues among four players trivialises them; on the other, the threads of counterpoint are more clearly distinguished...The two five-voice fugues are included with a guest and an exciting thickening of the texture. Meanwhile, one becomes aware of the brevity of the pieces. With only one part to worry about, each player always seems ready to play on.
