Notes & Reviews:

The late William Mathias probably stands, along with Alun Hoddinott, as one of the most important composers to emerge from Wales. Granted, this small country's music tends to get overshadowed by the efforts of composers from Great Britain, but Mathias wrote music that commands attention. His orchestral works especially the Symphonies and Piano Concertos) combine the electricity of Stravinsky with the dark hues of Britten. His chamber music is not as well known, so this reissue of the complete Quartets is certainly welcome. Mathias was by training and inclination a pianist (as anyone who knows the 3rd Piano Concerto can attest) but he made every effort as a student to learn the nature of string writing. His first published work was, in fact, the Divertimento for Strings of 1958. These pieces are not only substantial works in Mathias' canon, but are major additions to the contemporary quartet literature.
