Notes & Reviews:

The history of the Cathedral of Erfurt, Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Erfurt reestablished on July 8, 1944, reaches back to the 8th century. As the soloist, Silvius von Kessel writes, "The main organ in St. Mary's Cathedral is an instrument possessing mighty, sumptuous symphonic sound, with further charm added whenever the choir organ plays either simultaneously or in dialogue. This is why I deemed it musically appropriate to accommodate this given symphonic organ situation by choosing a corresponding symphonic program." Three of the four works recorded here (namely those by Wetz, Liszt and Reger) are related in some fashion to Erfurt or to St. Mary's Cathedral. Particular mention must be made that the recording of Wetz's Passacaglia is a premiere.
