Notes & Reviews:

In his day, John McCormack was certainly one of the greatest lyric tenors in the world. Audiences loved him, but even he admitted to being "the world's worst actor," one of the reasons he eventually switched from the operatic to the concert stage. As a concert singer he proved to be a huge success right up to his final concert in 1937. Today he is often underestimated. He is reproached for having abandoned his stage career in order to sing "trivial" ballads and Irish songs. What's more, most collections of his recordings are of lighter music. The present collection is dedicated to his opera performances and shows that he, in fact, was far more than an incredibly popular Irish tenor. This disc also demonstrates the firm foundation of his artistry.
