Brahms: Serenades 1 & 2 / Spering, Capella Augustina

Album Summary

>Brahms, Johannes : Serenade for orchestra no 1 in D major, Op. 11
>Brahms, Johannes : Serenade for orchestra no 2 in A major, Op. 16
Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

While the first serenade cannot deny its symphonic ambitions, the second serenade is clearly on the smaller scale, both in its length and in its instrumental dimensions. In it Brahms does entirely without the violins and relies above all on the winds as his melodic leads. Unfortunately, in today’s concert world these two splendid compositions are overshadowed by the same composer's symphonies – and so it is with all the greater pleasure that CPO presents this interpretation on historical instruments.
