Notes & Reviews:

Ernesto Halffter was one of the most important Spanish composers of the twentieth century. Halffter's piano works span his entire composing career, and in addition to his primary teacher, Manuel de Falla, show the influences of other important composers of his day: Stravinsky, Ravel (with whom Halffter also studied), Milhaud, Poulenc and Honegger. The centerpiece of this CD is the first full recorded performance of Sonatina, a one-act ballet that relates the story of a sad princess, a dragon, ladies in waiting, gypsies, and eventually, her prince. Some of Halffter's most-performed piano works are excerpted from this fascinating work.
