Notes & Reviews:

In an age when composers vied with one another in virtuosity, Johannes Ockeghem (c. 1420-1497) pulled off an indisputable tour de force. He conceived his 'Missa cuiusvis toni' to be sung in each of the church modes: on D, on E, on F and on G. This "Mass in every which mode" became an unsurpassable model cited as an example in most of the important treatises of the day.
