Notes & Reviews:

This recital by the Japanese pianist Mika Sato shows us how Liszt's virtuoso writing for the keyboard produced not only a richly dynamic original work as the Sonata in b-minor, but extended to "Fantasies" which served as treatments of works of other composers. But these were no mere transcriptions of operatic source material: these are elaborate, demanding works which transform the material into something new and wholly idiomatic for the piano, works which only confirmed Liszt's commanding reputation as a pianist.
