Notes & Reviews:

Schutz ranks as the first German musician of European standing: well-educated, broad-minded and ambitious, always deeply religious in his creative work. As musical director of the Electoral Court in Dresden, Schutz occupied one of the most important positions in German music for more than 50 years. As a close friend of Johann Schein and the cantor of St. Thomas' School, he held their Choir in high esteem. The printing of the collection on this CD set was dedicated to both them and the Leipzig Council. Any appreciation of Schutz's creative achievements must begin with his skill in the treatment of text and language. The Geistliche Chor-Music is typical of his carefully thought-out transcribing of verbal content into music. This music is also a masterpiece of its kind from a performing viewpoint, as well as in terms of compositional technique - a challenge which is well-met by the ensembles on this release.
