Notes & Reviews:

It appears that with Rheinberger's Suite, he had discovered a gap in the market. Evidently there was a need at the time for contemporary chamber works for solo instruments in which the organ was treated as a romantic instrument with its impressively varied range of colors and not as a continuo instrument appropriate for Baroque literature. Hence, between 1887 and 1889, the three works on this recording were written and premiered to critical acclaim. This recording was made on the historic Schwarz Organ at St. Blasien Cathedral, originally built in 1913 and restored in 1997. With more than 55 registers and 4,00 pipes distributed between three manuals and the pedal, plus a large number of 8 and 4-foot stops, a great variety of tone colors is possible.
