Notes & Reviews:

Charles Ives (1874–1954) never saw music as a full-time career and, in 1907, formed what was to become the very successful insurance agency Ives & Co. The success of his company allowed Ives to compose without the need to earn a living from it, meaning that he composed in a highly personal style with no regard to critical opinion. His idiosyncratic style led to his music being largely ignored during his lifetime, and it wasn't until after his death that a true assessment of its undoubted merits took place. Today Ives is recognized as one of the truly great pioneers of modern American music.
