Notes & Reviews:
Nan Merriman was born in 1920 in Pittsburgh. She grew up in Los Angeles where she took lessons from Lotte Lehmann. She was singing on radio and film soundtracks before she was 20, which drew her to the attention of Laurence Olivier, who hired her for a 1940 US tour. In 1943 Merriman participated in a competition staged by NBC and Toscanini heard the singer for the first time. This was the beginning of a long association with the maestro. Toscanini's preference for Merriman was based on the fact that she reminded him of the mezzo-sopranos of the late 19th and early 20th centuries with whom he had worked: singers with light, slender voices.
