Album Remarks & Appraisals:
Lukas Ligeti is a drummer and composer of Hungarian descent. Born in Vienna, he has lived in Burkina Faso and San Francisco and currently makes his home in New York City. His work fuses electronic and acoustic, traditional and avant-garde, European, American and African influences. For his second CD for Tzadik Lukas turns his hand to electronics. Using the Marimba Lumina, a new instrument invented recently by the legendary electronic pioneer Don Buchla, Lukas has created a hypnotic web of spinning polyrhythms inspired by American minimalism and African drumming.
The Wire (p.53) - "[A]n engaging polyrhythmic and polytextural music, motion based but also subtly layered for depth, contrast and unexpected closures."
Son of the famous composer Gyorgy Ligeti, Lukas Ligeti is a drummer who shares his father's penchant for complex, entrancing composition. Ligeti's second Tzadik release, 2008's AFRIKAN MACHINERY, finds him focusing on electronics, namely in his use of the Marimba Lumina, an instrument invented by electronics trailblazer Don Buchla. By combining these electronica elements with acoustic instruments, avant-garde strategies, and European and African influences, Ligeti creates a seductive sonic world of polyrhythms and shifting textures.
