Bach: Lachtzehn Leipziger Chorale / Almut Rössler

Notes & Reviews:

The soloist on this recording, Almut Rossler, writes, "The so-called Eighteen Chorales in Diverse Forms to be Performed on an Organ with Two Manuals and Pedal have for various reasons attained a special place in abundant hymnbased works of Bach. First of all, the title, which was introduced after Bach's death and is still in use today is, in fact, controversial. Undisputed, however, is Bach's wish in the last years of his life to compile and edit representative collections of his works for publication... Summarizing the overview of the Eighteen Chorales, one can only agree with Bach's biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel, when he wrote, 'One can hear nothing more worthy, sublime and pious than these chorales.'"
