Notes & Reviews:

Here is another notable example of the artistry of Willem Mengelberg. The Gluck was, until recently, quite a rarity, a reminder of a short-term relationship with the Decca Record Company. Both the Schubert items, however, are prime examples of the series Mengelberg and the Orchestra produced for Telefunken, a truly cherished moment in recording. The "Rosamunde" Overture was from early in their contract and the Symphony was one of the last recordings made for Telefunken. Indeed, this was one of the last commercial recordings made by Mengelberg, and this exceptional transfer not only preserves a fine performance but a bit of history as well.
