Notes & Reviews:

This recording brings together two inspired performances led by Sir John Barbirolli, beautifully remastered by Testament. Barbirolli's repertoire was wide, but the music of Jean Sibelius was always central to it, with thirteen commercial recordings of the various symphonies and fourteen of other orchestral music. The 'Symphony No. 2' is heard in a 1962 studio recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, while the 'Symphony No. 5' with the Halle Orchestra of Manchester is a live BBC Henry Wood Promenade Concert from 1968. Barbirolli;s recording of the second symphony heard here has long been a favorite of collectors, and was previously issued on Chesky Records.
