Notes & Reviews:

Shostakovich's three Sonatas for solo strings and piano (the above, along with the Cello Sonata, Op. 40) stand alongside his 15 String Quartets as his most important and personal works. These Sonatas were all conceived during periods of his life when he was experiencing a sense of emotional crisis. The Violin Sonata is significant for being among the first where he applied his own sensibilities to the use of the 12-tone technique, an idea which certainly stood in defiance of the still prevailing "socialist realism" of Soviet dictates. The Viola Sonata was, of course, to be one of his last works - a distillation of the emotions and attitudes of a composer who knew his life's journey was near completion.
