Notes & Reviews:

German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (b. 1925) is uncontested as the finest Lieder singer of his generation. He is lionized for his interpretations, his vocal shading and tonal color, exceptional rhythmic sense and impeccable diction. The Mahler recordings collected on this CD are made available here for the first time. Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt leads the NWDR Sinfonieorchester in the 1955 'Kindertotenlieder', while Otto Ackermann helms the Cologne RSO in the 1954 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen', followed by another version of the same work given at the 1957 Besancon Festival by Carl Schuricht and the Orchestre National de France.
