Album Summary
Performer
Howard McGill (Saxophone)
Notes & Reviews:
Dutton Epoch's mini-cycle of Sir Edward German's symphonies concludes with the release of this second disc, containing the 1893 "Norwich" Symphony coupled with the quasi-symphonic "Leeds" Suite (1895) and the ebullient March Rhapsody (1902). Only one movement of the "Leeds" Suite has previously been recorded; here Dutton Epoch is delighted to present all four movements including the Elgarian 'Elegy' featuring a solo saxophone. The "Norwich" is one of the most engaging British symphonies before Elgar, and the BBC Concert Orchestra led by John Wilson makes a terrific case for this tuneful music that was once a popular favorite.
