Album Summary
Conductor Ensemble ComposerNotes & Reviews:
CPO's project will be the first such complete undertaking of Spohr's complete symphonic works and is based on the new critical edition being prepared by the musicologist Bert Hagels in preparation for these recordings. Spohr composed his Symphony No. 2 in 1820 for the London Philharmonic Society Orchestra, an ensemble with which he was thoroughly pleased: "I am looking forward immensely to hearing this work, which I have conceived and carried to term with great enthusiasm, performed for the first time by such a splendid and strongly arrayed orchestra and in such a worthy locale." The performance was a huge success and made Spohr one of the most popular German composers in England.
