Mendelssohn: Elijah / Frieder Bernius, Stuttgart Classical Philharmonic Orchestra, et al

Album Summary

>Mendelssohn, Felix : Elijah, Op. 70
Performers Conductor Ensembles Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Few compositions document as compellingly as Elijah the shifting critical reception accorded Mendelssohn during the past 150 years. At the English premiere in 1846, it was hailed as a masterpiece but fell into disfavor as his music was accused of displaying a sanctimonious sentimentality. Now recognized as the equal of the Messiah, perhaps the true greatness of Elijah may be found in its ability to explore the manifold connections between the composer's Jewish ancestry and adopted Lutheran world view. Sung in German with full text and English translation included in the notes.
