Notes & Reviews:

Brahms recordings are not exactly in short supply in CD catalogues. Nevertheless MDG offers the young pianist Hardy Rittner the chance to demonstrate his superb talent in interpretations of Brahms' early piano compositions. The star of this recording is the original grand piano by Johann Baptist Streicher from 1851, an instrument offering an exact sample of the young Brahms' sound world. In its outstanding state of preservation (most of the strings are original!) it surprised MDG with its unexpectedly manifold and nuanced sound, bright treble, and impressive bass register. Hardy Rittner seems to feel right at home on this instrument.

International Piano
It is difficult to imagine this glorious music sounding more persuasive on an authentic instrumentà.Far from making allowances for the 150-year old mechanism, Rittner rejoices in its unique tonal properties, pushing it right to the edge in the outer movements of the Sonata, yet producing a magically veiled sound in the second of the Op. 10 Ballades.
