While he's never been an innovator, saxophonist Houston Person is one of the players maintaining the grand tradition of the huge-toned, unabashedly romantic style of tenor saxophone, continuing in the vein of giants like Gene Ammons, Illinois Jacquet, and, of course, Coleman Hawkins. The triple-disc set, ART AND SOUL, is a celebration of Person's enduring tenure with the High Note label and emphasizes his commitment to the Great American Songbook as typified by composers like Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and Duke Ellington. ART AND SOUL is all standards and highlights Person in duo (with Ron Carter!), quartet, and quintet contexts. Two of the jazz mainstream's finest drummers, Grady Tate and Kenny Washington, are on hand while on piano are time-honored veterans Richard Wyands and Stan Hope and the younger Bill Charlap. ART is a literal treasure-trove for jazz devotees and would make a fine gift for interested novices.
